Moving home

Careful organisation and planning can minimise the stress of moving home.

Four weeks before the move

  • Confirm the date of your move with SLH
  • If you are currently renting, remember to notify your landlord of your moving date
  • Make sure you have home contents insurance from the day you move in to your new home. SLH offers home contents insurance from as little as 87p per week
  • Book a moving company or ask friends to help
  • Book extra storage space if required
  • If you need new furniture or carpets order them now and arrange delivery for when you move in

Two weeks before moving

  • Start packing non-essential items such as books and non-seasonal clothes into boxes
  • Inform your doctor, dentist and optician if you're moving out of the area. Check Health Services where you're moving to and register with a GP and dentist
  • Arrange with the Post Office for your post to be forwarded (3 months costs approximately £19.50)
  • If you have children or pets, arrange for someone to look after them during the move
  • Finalise arrangements with your removal company. Confirm arrival times and make sure your removers have directions to your new address

Moving day

  • Remember to take final meter readings from your home and inform your utility suppliers that you are moving
  • Arrange a time to collect the keys for your new home from SLH
  • Take new meter readings for your utility suppliers in your new home and inform the utility suppliers, providing details of the date you moved into your new home
  • Set up a direct debit with SLH to pay your rent and notify your bank of any changes to existing direct debits and standing orders
