Volunteer Academy

The Volunteer Academy is South Liverpool Homes’ training programme for people interested in volunteering. The programme, delivered in partnership with The Whitechapel Centre, The Reader and Merseytravel, helps you develop new skills so that you feel confident in applying for volunteer roles in the community. Volunteering is a great way to give something back to your local community. If you are seeking work, volunteering is a great way to improve your job prospects too.

The academy will take place over six weeks for just a few hours per week at Parklands in Speke. Once you have completed the programme we will put you in touch with local organisations who are recruiting volunteers. Everyone who completes the course will receive a certificate of completion at the Volunteer Academy graduation ceremony.

The Market Place

The Market Place is a volunteer-run community shop in Speke which offers food and essential household goods to SLH tenants on a low income. The shop was set up by a small project team at South Liverpool Homes and is run solely by volunteers.

The project is about ‘more than just food’ - we also aim to make the shop a friendly, accessible venue where local people can find out about the range of services that SLH provides.

Roles include:

  • Controlling and managing stock levels
  • Serving in the shop and helping with queries
  • Receiving deliveries and stocking shelves
  • Keeping up to date with special promotions and putting up displays

Citizens Advice Bureau

Have you got a few hours per week to volunteer? The Citizens Advice Bureau in Liverpool, along with partner agencies, is looking to recruit people to work with first time tenants to give them basic financial education. This will hopefully get them to make better budgeting, borrowing, savings and banking decisions. As a result of this your clients will be able to manage their finances more effectively and help prevent crises occurring.

Prior to seeing clients you will receive full training to develop your coaching skills as well as improving your knowledge of financial issues. After you have been trained you will be placed in a host organisation - the most convenient one for you.

Once you are seeing clients you will receive full support to help you develop your skills.

In its own right the role will be a rewarding one, but in addition it may provide you with additional skills which you could use if you are looking to go into employment or a change of career.
