New tenants Joyce and Michael talk about the positive impact of social housing in South Liverpool

Lifelong Garston residents Joyce and Michael Powney are thrilled with their new home in Window Lane, Garston, just one part of South Liverpool Homes’ programme of major regeneration projects across South Liverpool.

The Powneys moved from Clifton Street in Garston Village just over two months ago, into one of 11 brand new two-bedroom properties developed by South Liverpool Homes in partnership with builders Lovell.

“My daughter had got one of South Liverpool's houses and it was lovely so I just thought, 'I'll take a chance and put my name down.'

"When these new builds came up I thought, 'Well I'm going to be cheeky and have a go' - and luckily enough we got one."

“Phone me as soon as you can, we’ve got a house!”

Joyce was looked after by Think South Liverpool lettings adviser Amanda Devereux, who gave her a brilliant surprise phone call one day, confirming that she was one of 11 applicants who had met the criteria for one of the state-of-the-art homes.

"I was in town at the time when she told me we had one and I just stopped in the middle of town and started shaking - I couldn't take it in what she was saying to me!

"As soon as Amanda got on the phone to me I was on the phone to him (Michael) - I knew he was driving his bus but I had to phone him and say, 'Phone me as soon as you can! We've got a new house!

"The South Liverpool people were absolutely brilliant,” added Joyce. “I can't fault them at all - they really have been helpful in every way."

Both Joyce and Michael have been impressed with the changes taking place in Garston, with 12 new homes also under development on the former Garston Market site on Island Road; another example of South Liverpool Homes’ position as a key driver of regeneration in the area. Meanwhile in Speke, work is underway on the redevelopment of The Crescent, with 28 new homes and two retail units on the way.

"I think the way they're doing it is absolutely brilliant,” said Joyce. “My brother came down here and he hadn't been down here for a long while - and he was absolutely astonished with it."

"We got the shock of our lives when we came down - how quiet it was, how it's changed - it's really changed for the better."

Recently retired bus driver Michael agreed and is looking forward to making the most of the leisure opportunities that his new home and neighbourhood provide: "Without these housing companies coming in, helping myself - a decent rent and decent house - after all the years I've wanted a garden and now I've got one!"
