Celebrating 2017 National Apprenticeship Week, we’re looking back on another successful year of our partnership with Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA), which has seen eight trainees complete five-week programmes in a variety of exciting airport roles.
South Liverpool Homes and Liverpool John Lennon Airport have a unique partnership, with the housing association’s Environmental Services team responsible for the airport’s extensive open spaces. And the partnership extends to providing traineeships and apprenticeships for young people from the Speke Garston area.
The 2016 programme saw eight trainees gain valuable experience in areas including the airport fire service, airfield operations, air traffic control and more.
Mike Wall was one of the young people who was introduced to the LJLA traineeship scheme delivered from Reach, which is part of South Liverpool Homes employability offer. Mike completed his traineeship work placement with LJLA air traffic control (ATC).
“I joined Liverpool John Lennon Airport on a five-week placement based in Air Traffic Control and have not regretted the decision to join ATC,” said Mike.
“They have been brilliant to work with, and have provided me with more skills than I entered the programme with. They showed me the importance of attention to detail, especially in the ATC environment where this is vital. These skills I believe will go very far in any industry that I enter.
“From my experience I hope to find future employment in the airport industry,” Mike continued. “I would like to say a big thank you to the ATC Group and also the departments I was with for the last week on my placement.”
