Long-term Speke resident Trevor Smith talks about his experience of getting involved in with South Liverpool Homes.
Living in Speke for over 50 years and being an active member of the local community, Trevor decided he wanted to have a more involved role and a bigger say in what happens where he lived.
“I heard that there was a vacancy on SLH’s Board through some friends who were involved with SLH so I decided to put my name forward,” explains Trevor. “I was delighted when I found out I got the position and was really looking forward to making a difference to the local community.”
Fast forward six years and Trevor is still an active member of the Board and remembers clearly how he felt when he went along to his first Board meeting.
“To be honest I was really relaxed and didn’t feel over-awed by it all,” says Trevor. “I think this was down to the fact that SLH arranged for me to come into the office beforehand to meet staff and learn about the business. This really helped me overcome ‘first-day’ nerves and helped me to settle into my role and the Board much easier.”
Trevor finds his role on the Board really varied. Helping with the complaints process, reviewing complaints and taking part in strategy days are just some of the things that Trevor gets involved with, this is in addition to attending Board meetings every three months.
Trevor doesn’t regret for one minute his decision to apply, “I absolutely love my role on the Board and I’m really proud to be part of the organisation. Everyone has been really friendly from day one and I love the fact that I am giving something back to my local community,” said Trevor.
“I would say to anyone who is thinking about applying to just do it! It’s really enjoyable as well as fabulous experience. Not only are you making a difference to your community, you are contributing to the strategic direction of the company too, from the perspective of a tenant.”
